Before the ship of M.V. Panagiotisran aground on the beach in 1980, Navagio was a simple cove, battered by wind and rain in the winter, with calm blue seas in the summer. The beach was called Agios Georgios after the monastery St George Krimnon, located on the cliffs above. After the ship beached on the sand, the beach was renamed “Navagio” Beach. “Navagio” is the Greek word for “Shipwreck”. It’s also sometimes known as shipwreck beach or smugglers cove.
